पंडित बिरजू महाराज का निधन 83 साल की उम्र में हार्ट अटैक से हुआ। वह लखनऊ के कालका बिंदादीन घराने के सदस्य थे।बिरजू महाराज का पूरा नाम बृज मोहन नाथ मिश्र था। उनका जन्म 4 फरवरी 1937 को लखनऊ के प्रसिद्ध कथक नर्तक परिवार में हुआ था।
बताया जा रहा है कि बिरजू महाराज कल देर रात अपने पोते- पोतियों के साथ अंताक्षरी खेल रहे थे तभी उनकी तबीयत खराब हो गई। उन्हें तुरंत दिल्ली के साकेत अस्पताल में ले जाया गया जहां डॉक्टरों ने उन्हें मृत घोषित कर दिया। उनके परिजनों ने बताया कि कुछ दिन पहले ही महाराज को गुर्दे की बीमारी का पता चला था।
महाराज को 1983 में पद्म विभूषण से सम्मानित किया गया था। उन्हें संगीत नाटक अकादमी पुरस्कार और कालिदास सम्मान भी मिले थे। बनारस हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय और खैरागढ़ विश्वविद्यालय ने बिरजू महाराज को डॉक्टरेट की मानद उपाधि भी दी थी।
बिरजू महाराज ने देवदास, डेढ़ इश्किया, उमराव जान और बाजी राव मस्तानी जैसी फिल्मों के लिए नृत्य संयोजन किया था। इसके अलाव इन्होंने सत्यजीत राय की फिल्म ‘शतरंज के खिलाड़ी’ में संगीत भी दिया था। उन्हें 2012 में ‘विश्वरूपम’ फिल्म में नृत्य संयोजन के लिए राष्ट्रीय फिल्म पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था। 2016 में बाजीराव मस्तानी के ‘मोहे रंग दो लाल’ गाने की कोरियाग्राफी के लिए उन्हें फिल्मफेयर पुरस्कार से नवाजा गया।
पंडित बिरजू महाराज को कला, फिल्म व संगीत जगत की तमाम हस्तियों ने श्रद्धांजलि दी है। साथ ही कई बड़े नेताओं ने भी श्रद्धांजलि व्यक्त की हैं।
